Be honest
Which one sounds like you?
“I'll get to it eventually.”
You haven't started and assume there's time.
“Our family gets along.”
Until a new in-law, a family home nobody wants to sell, or a dispute over who runs the estate.
“I wrote one years ago.”
Marriage, divorce, a new child or new assets may mean it no longer says what you think.
“My kids would go to family, wouldn't they?”
Not automatically. Without a named guardian, the court decides.
The talk covers all four.
The default rules
Who inherits if you have no Will?
Under Singapore's Intestate Succession Act, the law splits your estate by a fixed formula. Pick your situation.
- 50%Spouse
- 50%Children (shared equally)
Notice what's missing? The people you'd choose. A Will lets you decide.
Simplified for illustration. Muslim estates follow Faraid and are not covered by these rules. Source: Intestate Succession Act.
The essentials
Estate planning comes down to two documents
Most people mix them up. They do different jobs, and you need both.

Will
Will
When you pass on
Says who gets your assets when you pass on, who carries out your wishes, and who looks after your young children. Without one, the Intestate Succession Act splits your estate by a fixed formula.

Lasting Power of Attorney
Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)
While you're alive, but unable to decide
Names who can make decisions about your money, property and personal welfare if you lose mental capacity, after a stroke, an accident or dementia. Without one, your family may have to apply to court before they can act for you.
Side by side
With a Will vs without
Lasting Power of Attorney
If you lose mental capacity
A stroke, accident or dementia leaves you unable to decide
With an LPA
The person you chose steps in to manage your money, property and personal welfare.
Without an LPA
Your family applies to the Family Court for deputyship before they can act for you. This takes time and money.
